To summarize effectively students need to:<\/div>\n<p \/>\n<div>1. Delete some information<\/div>\n<p \/>\n<div>2. Substitute some information<\/div>\n<p \/>\n<div>3. Keep some information<\/div>\n<p \/>\n<div>This seems quite basic, even simple, but I didn&#039;t learn it until today. \u00a0Most of the time, I thought that a summary was just making something shorter. \u00a0If I had to summarize a story, I would just tell it in shorter words. \u00a0I never really tried to subsititue things unless it was changing a longer word for a shorter word. \u00a0<\/div>\n<p \/>\n<div>What summarizing really is, or what it should be for effective learning and communication, is getting to the heart of the problem. \u00a0The core. \u00a0Summarizing is finding what is <b>essential<\/b> and nothing more. \u00a0<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am reading a book called Classroom Instruction that Works.
