Moab!

I was recently chastised for not posting enough personal items here.  I am attempting to make amends.

The Moab trip was amazing.  Funny people, beautiful location, creation of a new language, and skydiving.  Awesome.

Great Presentations

A good communicator is hard to find.  I like this presentation by Xplane.  Learning how to express ideas is so important in all aspects of life. Especially teaching.

Google, You Ask To Much

Ok.  So Google is an amazing company with amazing technology.  And then something like this happens.

Are you kidding me?  You want me to copy some crazy code, go login to some support site and report a problem?  You gave me the code.  Why not auto report?  We will do a lot for you Google.  We id pictures, translate stuff, create pages, sign up for all your services, but if you can do something yourself, why not do it?

One of the Problems with Hollywood

Media_httpimageshuffingtonpostcomgen49145thumbsshollywoodlargejpg_vvuhctlznpcwsiv

Hollywood thinks that they are quite sophisticated and always right.

This is a quote from an interview with the makers of Where the Wild Things Are

What do you say to parents who think the Wild Things film may be too scary?

Sendak: I would tell them to go to hell. That’s a question I will not tolerate.”

You need to have opinions to be in the entertainment industry.  You are broadcasting your “views” every day.

But this goes too far.

Design is Simple

I liked this quote about design.  It’s not mystical or super complicated.

“What is design? It begins with ideas–ideas based in purpose. It requires a plan or a process. It yields innovation, invention or creation. It is successful if it elicits response–attention, desire, interaction or purchase.

Design is as much a process as it is an end product. The process should be simple.

After all my years in design, I remain wary of the branding and design consultancies that sell the strategic process before the work. The work should speak for itself. Did it deliver on its objectives? Did it break through in the market? Did people vote with interest, conversation, interaction or purchase? Was it beautiful? That’s what really matters.

…snip…

Honestly it’s simple. The best talent understands that. Rarely does the most extensive or unique “process” produce the simple insights necessary to do more than document a situation. The proof is in the pudding. Talented designers create it.”
