Collaboration Tools = Education

Media_httpimgskitchco_ihabc

I am in the midst of a crazy project in my Information Systems class at the moment.  It is the 3rd day of school and I have not stopped working on homework yet.  But as I was working I had a realization.

We do everything in teams at the Marriott School of Business.  If one of us doesn't get it was ask the other and then ask other teams.

Traditional education has looked down on team work as "cheating" but that is how it is in the real world.  Everyone at your company is (or at least should be) on the same team. You can ask and get help and solve problems.  The more education becomes like this, the better and faster I think we can learn.

ISYS! or Information Systems First Day

Today I started my real major.  Like for reals.  I am now an official Information Systems student and I have the bag to prove it.

We already have homework, which is to be expected.  The Junior Core is notoriously hard.

Here’s what I learned.

-Systems Analysis is understanding and specifying what a system should accomplish.  I thought analysis was just trouble shooting but it is much more.

-System Boundary is the separation between the system and its environment that inputs and outputs need to cross.

I can’t help it. When I think of systems I think of the cartoon Reboot that I used to watch with it’s boundaries, and inputs and outputs and users.

One thing that also stood out to me is that back in the old days, ever business needed a sales guy.  You have to sell things to make money and survive.  Now, every business needs an Information Systems guy. You can’t survive now without a website, internal web apps, systems and automation.  Everyone else has them, you need to use them or get left behind.

All in all, I am excited to be jumping into my real major.

Software Shouldn’t Scare

Picture_1

I was upgrading some routine stuff on my MacBook today when I got this message.

Yikes.

I think that messages like this are what scare people.  They imply, whispering in your ear, "If you mess this up you can ruin your computer.  Have a nice day."

I think that software should be made in such a way that is really hard to mess up.  For example detect if the power cord is in and refuse to update until that requirement is met.

It's time for some friendlier, gentler software.

Wow. At least they know what they want.

I also crashed on my mountain bike and got hammered.  Sandstone and cactus are hard friends.

I have a week left in Moab and then it is back to BYU to start on my major.

Facebook is blowing it on music

I still make visits to MySpace.  I know, I know.  I hate MySpace just as much as everyone else.  But I still have to go there sometimes.  Why?

Facebook is blowing the whole music thing.  They have half a million engineers down in California.  Can someone please just build a nice music app that bands can use?  Then I could let MySpace die quietly.
